FBC History

Since 1849, San Francisco has been the home of the First Baptist Church of San Francisco. Through the decades a rich heritage and history has developed around FBC. To preserve this heritage the First Baptist Church Historical Commission was established to collect, catalogue and preserve the history of the church so future generations may experience and learn from her legacy.

Using current technologies, church records, photographs and artifacts are being preserved and computerized for future generations. From the first leather bound book of church business minutes begun in 1849 to current publications, the Commission brings into the light the facts and futures that FBC has seen.

The Commission officially sanctioned by the Church Board in 2000 as part of the Sequecenternial Celebration of the birth of FBC. Formerly, the history of the church lived in the few who had been members for decades. They are the ones that lived the history of FBC. They kept bulletins, newsletters, and other memorabilia which was passed on by their estates to the church.

Wheeler Early Years - Story of the Early Baptist History in California” by Dr. O.C. Wheeler
The printed address Dr. Wheeler made to the California Baptist Historical Society (CBHS) in the late 1800s. His book “The Story of Early Baptist History in California” is the electronic conversion of that small red book published by the CBHS.
